Spring Ephemerals
Woodland Wonders

March 08, 2022

Dicentra

Spring ephemeral season is upon us in Maryland which signals the end of a cold winter for us! As the days start to get longer, these perennial woodland wildflowers emerge from the soils and complete their life cycle before the trees and shrubs leaf out and end up using the majority of available light.

Even though ephemerals are known for their diminutive size and short-lived nature, these wildflowers are anything but delicate.

Low soil temperatures make nutrient and water uptake an arduous task, and the ever-present threat of frost or snow makes it a difficult time to be a plant!

We hope you have the opportunity to get outside and enjoy the magic of spring ephemerals. It will only be a few short weeks before they are back underground waiting to bloom again next spring!
