WHAT'S BLOOMING WEDNESDAY
azaleas

April 28, 2021
Spring is in her full glory this week, with azaleas abounding with blooms in every shady or tree-dappled corner.

Our take on What’s Blooming Wednesday is an opportunity for you to identify some of our favorite flowering plants, shrubs, and trees. If you look closely, you’ll notice this week’s selection blooming in your neighborhood or backyard! Let’s talk about azaleas.

Azaleas are very common flowering shrubs, but should not be overlooked. Unlike other spring blooms, azaleas perform for weeks at a time, their prolific blooms transforming the shrub into a long-lasting swath of color!

Available in shades of red, orange, various shades of bright and light pinks, to lavender and warm orchid purples. For a softer palette, look carefully for white or pale yellow azaleas. You’ll always be able to select an azalea that coordinates with your home’s façade and existing garden foliage.

Azaleas can be semi-evergreen to evergreen, low-growing to medium-sized shrub. If you are looking for a visit for some spectacular azalea views, we recommend  visiting Brighton Dam Azalea Garden, with over 22,000 azaleas in a spectacular woodland display. For a more formal garden walk, check out Sherwood Gardens in Guilford for its tulips paired with azaleas.
