As landscape architects, we’ve long recognized the importance of sustainability and take great pride in ‘walking the talk’ in our community designs. We are excited to announce a successful design-build collaboration creating six passive (energy-efficient) residences for researchers of the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center.
Built into a wooded hillside south of Annapolis, these homes will be designed using the Passive House Model to create high performance enclosures combined with renewable energy technology to yield a net-positive energy structure. The surrounding landscapes will put in place a series of modern stormwater Best Management Practices (BMPs) and rain harvesting systems to greatly reduce the runoff coefficient of the buildings and surrounding impervious surfaces.
Starting the project from the ground up has been extremely beneficial in being able to properly site the homes and right of ways, while minimizing the disturbance to the natural landscapes and maintaining the strict guidelines of the Passive Housing Alliance.
